For Mukkala, the biathlon season begins on November 15–16 in Kontiolahti, where Finland’s national team will have qualification races to determine who will compete in the World Cup and who’ll start the season in the IBU Cup. Although the Kontiolahti race won’t be televised, fans can follow it live on the Karjalainen newspaper’s website. “In turn, the Biathlon World Cup will be the lead-up to the 2026 Winter Olympics, while the IBU Cup gives others a chance to prove themselves,” Mukkala explains. The Olympics will take place in February 2026 in Anterselva, Italy, welcoming the athletes and fans from around the world to fill the arena with cheers.

In addition to biathlon, Mukkala plans to participate in cross-country skiing events, starting with the Finnish Cup at Ounasvaara. “Last year, my season was disrupted by mononucleosis, so this year I’m looking forward to competing in both biathlon and skiing as much as the schedule allows,” he adds.

Keeping the stakes high

Mukkala’s main goal for the season is clear: “I want to start directly in the World Cup opener and stay there for the entire season, delivering consistent top 20 performances, and make it to the Olympics.” By the end of January 2026, the four top Finnish biathletes will secure their Olympic spots, with one additional spot reserved.

For the Finnish biathletes, the hard work continues throughout the year. For example, the basic training weeks include six days of intense morning and afternoon sessions, combining endurance work with shooting drills. This year, the A-team also increased high-altitude training to eight weeks to prepare for the 2026 Olympic venue, located 1,600 meters above sea level. “The air is thinner there, so this preparation is essential,” Mukkala says.

Precision, power and preparation

“It’s been a good and successful preseason. Currently, we’re just putting the final touches in place,” Mukkala notes, feeling stronger than ever. “I’ve improved in almost every area. All my physical test results have hit personal bests this year.”  While no significant changes were made to his training program, Mukkala has managed to fine-tune his top-load performance and improve his recovery. “I like to train at high intensity, but that also comes with risks, so we’ve paid special attention to avoiding overtraining.” Shooting has also been a key focus. “I’ve done more of pure shooting sessions this year—just volume work to make everything as automatic as possible.”

At Mukkala’s home base, a new ski treadmill has been an important addition. “The treadmill is 4.5 meters long and 3 meters wide, allowing diverse and controlled ski training year-round. Cameras in every direction help fine-tune technique—it’s a big advantage,” Mukkala rejoices.

Five, four, three, two, one, go!

All in all, the upcoming biathlon season will be thrilling. With LICO’s support behind him, Mukkala’s journey is powered by both Finnish grit and precision engineering.

“It’s great to have a strong and lasting partnership with LICO. I’m proud to represent the brand on the international stage once again. 2026 will be our third year together, and it’s been an excellent collaboration since 2023.” Mukkala also encourages biathlon fans to follow the upcoming winter season: “Keep an eye on the Finnish team and the flag high—it’s going to be an exciting year!”
